Washington DC
The staircase in this narrow Capitol Hill row house was effectively segregating the front living space from the rear kitchen and sitting room. The clients requested a design solution that would allow for one large living space with abundant natural light. KUBE’s solution was to replace the enclosed wood stair with an open steel frame stair, enlarge the rear windows and doors, and to re-orient the kitchen so that the visual flow between front and rear rooms was unobstructed.
The material and finish palette selected also reinforces the open space design. Light bamboo floors throughout replaced the dark floors, and custom mill work was designed for each area of the main floor in order to integrate the new continuous space.
