The strategy for this exterior and interior renovation was to use a series of “frames” which act as thresholds.

On the exterior, a new steel and glass canopy frames a new glass door which is further framed by yellow composite panels. A large window was introduced at the living room level to introduce more natural light, along with a new garage door. These two new elements are partially framed by additional panels in blue. The black frames around the new windows, front door and canopy further emphasize the frame concept.

On the inside the renovation was limited to the main living area on the first floor. The design intention was to surgically remove walls to allow for a smooth and more open transition from entry to living, living to dining, and dining to outdoor patio. Steel frames were introduced in the locations where the walls were removed. Here frames act as thresholds from entry stairs to living room, and from living room to dining room. The black framed sliding doors in the rear also act as a threshold from interior to exterior.

The architects opted for an overfall neutral palette in order to highlight areas of color. The exterior brick was painted white, highlighting the colored panels and black frames.  On the interior a new steel framed fireplace is set against a blue-green wall which slides from the front living room to the adjacent dining and kitchen area. The colored wall is furthered highlighted and framed by LED strip lights.
